HOUSE TRAP is a great little thriller I picked up on smashwords.com for just a buck and I have to say I was pleased with my purchase. Mike Mauthor’s short story is suspenseful and well written, chockfull of action and white-knuckle moments. Nothing like young people trapped in a house with a killer to get the blood pumping.
The realistic way in which the characters are portrayed, for me, played a big part in the success of the story. The villain(s) and the victims alike felt true to the ages of the characters as well as the situation and circumstances. I also appreciate that this is a fast passed read that holds true from start to finish; not overly written with unnecessary details slowing it down, but moving quickly and holding the reader’s attention with clever little plot twist, just as a thriller should.
My only complaint was the way in which the writing focus switched between the characters, seemingly without warning, but that may have more to do with the e-format than the writer himself. All in all I’d say HOUSE TRAP is a great story for anyone looking for a short and easy show-not-tell read.
- The Benson (Experiment in Terror #2.5)
on Dec. 09, 2011
Even though it’s a shorty, I’m always excited to go on a paranormal adventure with Perry and Dex; and THE BENSON (Experiment in Terror #2.5) does not disappoint. In this little novella, our fearsome two checkout a well known “haunted” hotel in Portland and quickly find themselves in a tight spot. And even though this is a quick read, I can assure you there is no shortage of personality, chemistry and of course nail biting thrills that we have come to expect from this addicting series. THE BENSON is truly a great little read and at the cost of… oh a FREE… that’s right free, how could you not check out this little gem.
