  • Wild Child on Aug. 27, 2011

Wild Child is a very well-written, fast paced YA book that I found impossible to put down. Kyle can't resist Briana, even with her wild risky ways, which lead to big trouble for both of them. The book starts with a shock when Briana tries to swim across a lake and is hit by a motorboat. The parent in me wanted to lecture some sense into her! That's how strongly the story hits, once the reader realizes how badly injured the girl is. Things get really strange after that, and the story ends with a twist I didn't see coming. I highly recommend this book to fans of YA fiction that veers into the unexplained.

D.H. Nevins’ lead character, Kali Michaels, narrates this story. She meets a man on a mountain peak while taking a break from a group she is guiding through the wilderness and instantly feels a strong connection with him. Then, ten years later, after graduating college and while taking a leisurely hike up the same peak, the world turns upside-down. Kali fights her way through a land in upheaval, only to find the same man standing in the same place as years before. She learns his name, Tiamat, and that he is one of 100 half-angels, Nephilim, that have just destroyed Earth per God’s instruction to send his children home for judgment. However, being half-human, Tiamat finds himself drawn to the woman who had so fascinated him ten years before. Tiamat also senses that Kali has a purpose to carry out as she has a special ability to find living people, of which there are surviving groups, and thus does not take her life. Tiamat informs Kali that she must seek these pockets of survivors, and in preparation for her trials, he has stockpiled food and water. He finds horses to help in her quest. Through accidental contact with the Nephilim’s blood, Kali gains additional traits that help her survive. Throughout the book, Kali comes into contact with additional Nephilim and must do battle with more than one. She must stand and watch the one she loves as he falls. And she must deal with the reality of her true father, not the loving man who raised her. All-in-all I give this well written novel four stars. While it caught my interest immediately, I would have enjoyed more dialog. And while there is a lot of dramatic instances, I feel they could have been embellished to create more tension. I look forward to the sequel and any additional works by this talented author.

I smiled when I recognized the names of some of the characters as being fellow authors. The tale kept me riveted. In fact, it was supposed to be a cozy bedtime read, in my mind anyway, but I kept myself awake to find out what happens next! A kidnap mystery, a devoted homing pigeon you can't help but love, a suspicious son with a suspiciously familiar name, a rascally boy with an equally suspicious name, a dedicated friend working with law enforcement to find the victim in time....it has all the elements of a great suspense. I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It was well written and flowed perfectly from beginning to end.
