As Caesar's first invasion force lands on Britain in 55 BC, the legionnaire Lucanis learns the shocking truth behind the ill-fated expedition and to what lengths some will go to in order to protect the future.
The Penitent Assassin is definitely a dark fantasy, but there's plenty of (dark) humor scattered throughout, as well. This was an excellent read - it's been a very long time since I've read a book that managed to surprise me, but TPA managed it not once, but several times :)
Between revenge, genocide, murder, thievery, lust and murky plots, the book is fast-paced, engaging and very well worth a read.
The characters are rich, the land's history is well developed and the setting is definitely ripe for a sequel. I'm definitely hoping to read more from Shawn, whether in Mallor's world or in another one yet to be dreamed up.
