Peter Plasse

Biography

I was born in northern Maine, the grandson of an American-born fur-trapper of French-Canadian descent. I grew up in Lexington, Massachusetts and have been an avid reader of Science Fiction/Fantasy since my college days. Having read Asimov, Bradbury, Brooks, (Is The "Sword of Shannara" series a great story or what?) Heinlein, Tolkien, Jordan, Herbert, (awesome command of words) Zelazny, and many, many others, the one author that stands alone as my all-time favorite is Terry Goodkind. And I must acknowledge, before I write another word, his phrase "Focus on the solution, not on the problem." I am not sure if it was he that originally coined the phrase. Nevertheless, I have quoted him a billion times to Interns and Residents on rounds. (As well as in Ravenwild where I actually name him). It is one of the most important principles in the practice of Emergency Medicine, (not to mention life in general) where we oftentimes make important decisons, some of which involve significant risk to the patient, on interventions based upon very little information. These words are so simple, yet I believe them to be some of the wisest words ever written.

Motivation for writing Ravenwild: I have always been told I am a good story-teller, and I have always enjoyed reading. So one day, inspired by nothing more than the challenge of writing a good story that my kids might someday enjoy reading, I sat down and cranked out Chapter 1 (which is now chapter 2, but that is a tale for another time). I then immediately forgot about it. A year or so later, I was looking for some file on my hard drive, and stumbled across it. I read it, and actually thought it was pretty good, so I just kept writing. 8 or so years later I ended up with a book.

Early in my life I was a hunter, fisherman, trapper, and avid scuba enthusiast. I have come to realize that we have a much greater responsibility to the planet than I ever thought much about when I was younger, so I no longer hunt. I still fish, and scuba, but if I do take anything home with me, it is for one meal only. Some old habits just plain die hard...
