Mike Montego, on patrol in Hollywood in the early 60s; He must catch the killer savagely butchering women on his beat; then deal with a series of art thefts, crooked cops, a complicated girlfriend, and bloody mayhem. On plainclothes patrol he has a problem, his partner. Not good. Someone might get hurt—him! When the mother of an old school chum says her son is missing. Montego decides to find his pal. The search takes him into the world of cool jazz and Las Vegas, and involves him with relentless bad guys. About to make detective grade, he finds himself handling more domestic violence cases. On the flight over he meets a young mother with a toddler on a heartbreaking trip to bury her surfer brother murdered days earlier. Montego privately investigates. He gets involved in physical assaults, kidnappings, murder, and with a beautiful Eurasian resulting in a surprise discovery.
