Steven Thorp’s journalist wife, Chieko Hasegawa, is murdered while investigating a crime in Okinawa supposedly committed by American airmen. Although distraught at American bureaucratic inaction he chooses to memorialize Chieko by planting her favorite persimmon tree in the Hasegawa garden and, as he remembers his happy time spent with her, wonders if he should keep the Hasegawa name alive.

The Other Side of the Moon is about forbidden love. An American white couple adopts a black infant, Thomas, in Kenya, and later have a daughter of their own, Kim. Thomas and Kim fall in love and, because of it, suffer pain and indignities. They also make an explosive discovery about their births. Not deterred by anything, they self exile themselves to Mexico to protect themselves and their love.

Kevin, unaware of his sexual orientation, divorces his wife but keeps his daughter who has chosen to live with him. To deal with his loneliness, he brings Pat, a recovering drug addict, to his home as a live-in companion to his family. Soon the three are emotionally bonded. An attempted sexual assault on Kimberley by a stranger becomes a catalyst for their lives spiraling out of control.
