Retlaw, a New York state race horse was doped with sulphanol in July 1938. The suspected perpetrator, Harold Riner, was nabbed inside the stall around 3:30 a.m. The chemical suphanol was found in the horse's system through a saliva test first given horses in the '30s. The man claimed to be only seeking a night's rest in the stable. My book looks at this incident and the broader issue of doping.
