Back in early 2009, I was writing articles for an on-line magazine. When I applied for the job, they asked me to pitch to them what made me tick. Whatever I said, they knighted me the 'Underground Travel' reporter. I don't know if that meant reporting about things below street level or they perceived me as the fringe living Bohemian that I am. I just wrote whatever I wanted and nobody got hurt.

This zine is about my travels in three empire states: Japan, China and Mongolia. Of course, it’s also partial: it’s my trip, it’s what I saw and thought and experienced. So while it's about the stuff I mention, it is also about me: it can’t not be, as everything we write reflects who we are. So there's some identity musings in here too, plus a bit on dark tourism. And some fun stuff too.

The whole trip was organized on Facebook, and it came at a time when my life and studies were breaking me and I hadn’t realized just how much stress I’d been under.

Free travelogue. I've always been fascinated by Frank Lloyd Wright & the many craftsmen homes he designed there. I grew up listening to Chicago-style blues & longed to hear some Blues’ bands perform at the famous “Buddy Guy’s”. I've also been intrigued by Chicago’s colorful gangster past & wanted to see a live show at the Second City Improv. And then--there's the famous pizza! Who can say no?

This is the story of a 2011/2012 road trip from Spain to Gambia, part of the Plymouth-Banjul Banger Rally. In it, I talk about all kinds of stuff: Western Sahara separatism, the Chinese mafia in Nouakchott and the slippery 'fixers' we dealt with along the way. There's also a poo story. I don't talk all that much about cars because I don't understand them, but I do talk about how I tried to learn.
