He also excelled at racing sports cars in the late 1940s and 1950s. The Dusseldorf driver was at his best driving a German Veritas car that he drove in numerous competitions in Germany and Europe.

Piero Carini was a multi-talented driver for Ferrari in the 1950s, one who caught the attention of the Ferrari executives in Modena. It was in 1953 that Carini joined the works Ferrari team in what was essentially a back up role to top driver Umberto Maglioli. He moved on to Alfa Romeo in 1954, Carini was driving a Ferrari Testa Rosa in a St. Etienne sports car race when he was killed.

Paco Godia was a works Maserati driver and later entered private Maseratis when the factory broke ties with him. Godia was not a major player in Grand Prix racing, entering his first race, the '51 Spanish Grand Prix and his last, the 1958 French Grand Prix at Reims, within a span of seven seasons. Godia also raced sports cars until '68. Among his best finishes was a 4th at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Henry Taylor raced Ford Cortinas after he stopped Grand Prix racing in the early 1960s. The Ford Cortina was a quentisential British car that appeared in rallys and meets like Goodwood and Silverstone. Pleurisy ended his life at his home in the south of France following years of decline. Taylor's greatest contribution to racing in my opinion was his versatility as a racer and business executive.

Sergio Mantovani had a bright future in Grand Prix racing it was thought in the mid-1950s. Then circumstances and fate intervened and Mantovani's career ended abruptly the same season he began to race Formula 1 cars. He was part of a contingent of fine Italian drivers who were extended contracts by Maserati in 1953. Among the others was Luigi Musso who was later killed at a very young age.

Tony Brooks was a sports car racer and a Formula 1 driver from England. He drove a works Ferrari beginning in the mid 1950s, following a stint racing Aston Martin sports cars at Goodwood and Silverstone. Tony was trained as a dentist like his father. Stirling Moss, the great British driver, once made the statement that Brooks as the greatest unknown racing driver. Brooks retired after 1961.

Mike Parkes was injured severely in 1967 when his Ferrari slipped on oil laid down by a BRM driven by Jackie Stewart. Parkes never recovered fully but he did return to racing in 1970. He worked as an engineer for Ferrari and Lancia before he was killed in Turin, Italy when his Lancia car ran into a lorry. He began his racing career and had many great runs at Silverstone, Goodwood, etc.

Williy Mairesse drove a works Ferrari as a sports car racer and Formula 1 driver beginning in 1960. He sustained injuries in a wreck at the Mulsanne Straight at Le Mans, France in 1968. Race observers believe the severity of his injuries may have caused his suicide the following year. Mairesse ended his life in an Osten Belgium hotel room. His legacy is one of versatility and steely determination.

Ludovico Scarfiotti was a talented mid 20th century Formula 1 and sports car driver from Lodi, Italy. He ran Le Mans, Sebring, the Grand Prix circuit and was an excellent hill climber in Europe. Unfortunately his early demise occurred while he was participating in the European hill climbing championship near Berchtesgaden, Germany. He also raced NASCAR including the Rockingham 500 race of 1963.

Jo Bonnier was a versatile driver who began racing motorcycles when he was only seventeen. In sports car and F1 events Jo drove Lolas, BRMs, Porsches (beginning in 1961) and Coopers. Considered an athlete before his time because of his leadership in driver/constructors affairs, he also raced ubiquitously over three decades. It is unfortunate for the racing world that his life was so very short.

Eugenio Castellotti was a skilled racer whose career began in Italy's famed Mille Miglia in 1951. He entered a Ferrari that he had purchased from a local benefactor, leaving the Brescia ramp at 3:30 am in the morning on race day. The scion of a wealthy Lodi, Italy family, Eugenio raced Lancia cars until the marque merged with Scuderia Ferrari in late 1955. From 1956- January '57 he raced Ferraris.

Luigi Musso was at once an Italian race driver and playboy. He dated playgirl/writer Doris Lilly (author of How To Marry A Millionaire) and beautiful Italian actress Fiamma Breschi. Musso was unfortunately one of many casualties of the sport he loved best. He died at Reims, France early in the 1958 French Grand Prix. Breschi held his hand in the hospital before trying suicide the same day.

Phil Hill and Richie Ginther were Ferrari works drivers in the early 1960s, two of the three principal drivers of the Dino Shark-nosed cars entered in Formula 1 events by Maranello boss Enzo Ferrari. Though Ginther was never a World Champion like Hill, he nevertheless played a significant role in the European type of racing. In fact when Richie retired he settled in France where he died in 1989.

Giancarlo Baghetti raced neck and neck with American driver Dan Gurney's Porsche at the Formula 1 Reims Grand Prix in 1961.
