Some American writers of crime fiction were called “American Conan Doyle,” but only two created detectives that have been called “American Sherlock Holmes.” The first "American Sherlock" is Professor Augustus S. F. X. Van Dusen, also known as “The Thinking Machine,” created by Jacques Futrelle. The second “American Sherlock" is Dr. Craig Kennedy, scientific detective created by Arthur B. Reeve.
