On August 23, 476 Odoacer assumed the crown formerly worn by Roman Caesars. He easily defeated the weakling Roman ruler Romulus Augustus, and had himself crowned King of Italy. Odoacer proved an effective ruler who permitted the Roman administration to run without hindrance from him. Theodoric, a Goth leader, invaded Rome in 489. Odoacer's final stronghold, Ravenna, fell on March 5, 493.

In 1935 Italian scientists and archaeologists were searching for the medieval tomb of the Goth leader Alaric. History records that Alaric was soon to invade North Africa to ensure steady supplies of food arriving in Rome. Just before he set off he became feverish and died. His Goth survivors buried his body in the Busento River. The men who dug his grave were slain so no one knew its location.

It is intriguing that Tamerlane focused his military campaigns on Asia rather than Europe. Had the reverse been true, Europe would presently exude a much more oriental flavor. Historians tell us that Tamerlane surpassed Genghis Khan as a leader because the latter had the advantage of an organized Mongol force. This contingent helped him from the very outset. Tamerlane had to be more resourceful.

My e-book is a concise picture of medieval society in Rome, Italy in the late 16th century. The Cencis were of noble class. This is noteworthy because it is evident that Francesco Cenci bought his way out of his crimes by paying graft to the Vatican. Young readers will learn of the class system in this era along with the severity of punishment for criminals. Beatrice remains a tragic personage.

Richard Plantagenet, King of England, was a brave soldier and a great Crusader. He won many battles against the Muslims in the Holy Land. He earned the name “Lionheart”, but he was not a good king. He didn’t like England. He spent about six months there during his ten year reign. He sold the country’s lands to the highest bidder to raise money for the Crusades.
