In 1942, as a US Army Sergeant in the Philippines, he was among those captured on Corregidor. After years of POW camps on Taiwan and Japan, he was forced to make propaganda broadcasts from Radio Tokyo. He was convicted in a 1952 NYC treason trial, the decision overturned in 1954.
