Eugene Boffa was president of the Edgewater Bank of New Jersey when it collapsed in 1958. The failed bank was the creation of "boy wonder" entrepreneur Earl Belle. Belle fled to Rio de Janeiro before facing U.S. federal charges. The indictment against Pittsburgh resident Belle and his codirector, Mitchell Ostwind grew out of a federal investigation.
