The 1950s was an era of great boxing and Kid Gavilan was one of the most talented of the welterweights. He beat Johnny Bratton on May 18, 1951 to win the welterweight title left vacant by Sugar Ray Robinson. This was an era when black and whites did not meet in the ring in states like Florida. In fact Gavilan's bout with Bobby Dykes in 1952 was the first mixed race fight in the Sunshine State.

Lew Feldman was a very active boxer in both the lightweight and featherweight divisions of boxing, from 1927-1940. He fought Kid Chocolate for the featherweight championship of the world in 1932. Lew was a native of Scotland but came to Brooklyn early in his life. He was raised on the rough streets of Brownsville. I have used contemporary newspaper accounts to chronicle many of Feldman's bouts.
