Artemisia Gentileschi: Her Life, Her Genius, Her Due
by Francesca Elia
In the 17th century when being an artist was strictly for men; few female artists were accepted. This changed during the 1600’s with one of the most accomplished painters, Artemisia Gentileschi. Honored as the first woman to gain membership into the Florentine Accademia delle arti; her art was overshadowed by violence and a trial that transformed her into an icon of female liberation.
