Doctors sought methods of weakening the contagion and two of the most relied upon treatments were gamma globulin and amidopyrine. The latter was used by several Chicago physicians as early as 1929. Gamma globulin is injected into the muscle of a patient after he/she has been exposed to measles. It often weakens the disease.
