In 1960, a discovery in the Olduvai Gorge in the African Rift led to the identification of an ancient hominid that became extinct nearly one-and-a-half million years ago. Or so it was thought. Then, in 1999, a team goes to the area for what is expected to be routine research. What they find is nothing short of a nightmare and they must confront issues of science, faith and human nature.
