BANABA - Land of hidden wealth

The chance discovery in 1900 of an enormous quantity of phosphate mineral fertilizer ("guano") lying beneath the tiny Pacific Island of Banaba, was welcomed by the farming community worldwide. It was quickly declared a British possession-the Banaban native chiefs called together to 'lease' their land rights to the company to mine.
Banaba was soon to take on the appearance of a rocky moonscape..
