A wealthy Roman, Giorgio Scarlatti's career spanned the 1950s. His sports car career began in '50 and by late he was racing Formula 1 cars. Despite successful results with Maserati in 1957 the Italian car maker opted to get out of racing after the season. Giorgio also drove an Alfa Romeo and various F1 autos fielded by Scuderia Centro Sud. He and Lorenzo Bandini won a key race at Pescara in 1961.

Andrea de Cesaris had a lengthy Formula 1 race career and also drove sports cars in endurance races. He started with Alfa Romeo and McLaren and later drove for the fledgling Jordan team in the early 1990s. He earned five podiums and flirted with victory at Spa-Francorchamps on one occasion. The closest de Cesaris came to winning was at Monaco in 1982. His Alfa gave out of gas on the final lap.

Sergio Mantovani had a bright future in Grand Prix racing it was thought in the mid-1950s. Then circumstances and fate intervened and Mantovani's career ended abruptly the same season he began to race Formula 1 cars. He was part of a contingent of fine Italian drivers who were extended contracts by Maserati in 1953. Among the others was Luigi Musso who was later killed at a very young age.

Luigi Musso was at once an Italian race driver and playboy. He dated playgirl/writer Doris Lilly (author of How To Marry A Millionaire) and beautiful Italian actress Fiamma Breschi. Musso was unfortunately one of many casualties of the sport he loved best. He died at Reims, France early in the 1958 French Grand Prix. Breschi held his hand in the hospital before trying suicide the same day.

Bruno Giacomelli came along when Grand Prix race cars were developing turbo charged engines. Ligier, Renault, Brabham and Alfa Romeo all used them in their F1 cars. Giacomelli was an exceptionally fast racer who had excelled with March BMW in F2. Debuting with McLaren-Ford he drove the majority of his career with Alfa. Derek Daley's Tyrell ran flush into Giacomelli's rear at Monaco in May 1980.
