The sun has set. Tony and Evo head east from the tiny town of Owl to discover the exclusive communities of Palm Springs are on fire. Familes huddle on their lawns as looters ransack their homes. Date palms become fiery torches that light Tony's way through a maze of burning mansions, street hustlers, and Psytrance parties. Tony buys an emerald necklace that once belonged to PARIS HILTON but Evo refuses to wear it. They reach the Palms to Pines Highway, which snakes into the high desert and arrive at Nirvana, a self-sufficient compound hidden at the base of Sheep Mountain. It's a great time-out for our Dynamic Duo as they rest in a geodesic dome and consider staying long enough for Evo to give birth to their first child. NIRVANA is a sprawling masterpiece that is self-contained, complete with fishponds filled with salmon & trout, vegan gardens, orange & avocado groves, mountain streams, goats, chickens, and a golden retriever named Cosmo. There's even contact with the outside world via ham radio. But will the apparently 'safe' lifestyle in a dangerous world last?

Puko'o Fishpond had been built in the 1500s by the king of Moloka'i. Before its construction, a man named Kilo had told the king that the work could not be done without the help of kahunas. The king said Kilo's punishment for this outburst was to be cooked alive in an imu when the pond was complete. Instead of worrying about his impending doom, Kilo organized the men from Moloka'i into a long line from the ocean up into the mountain. Stones were passed hand-to-hand down to the men building the walls. The tramping of so many feet raised a big red cloud of dust over Puko'o that blotted out the sun. The men's hair and skin turned red. They threw dust into each other's faces and said, "Kanaka o Moloka'i ehu i ka lepo," a protest slogan over having to slave for the king. Kilo told the men that he would soon be part of the swirling red dust when the pond was finished.
