Juan Zurita Mexican Lightweight Boxer
by Robert Grey Reynolds, Jr
Juan Zurita fought Ike Williams for the N.B.A. lightweight title in April 1945. Williams was coming off a lackluster fight versus Willie Joyce. Scheduled for Philadelphia Williams and Zurita actually met in a Mexico City bullring. The fight itself was not nearly as exciting as Zurita's fight against Sammy Angott in March 1944. The 5'5" Mexican was a switch hitter, a style that excited spectators.
