Kid Dropper became the most prominent gangster in New York's Lower East Side in the early 1920s. Kid Spanish, a mixed Spanish and Jewish thug, was among Dropper's principal rivals. Both of them got their start in the Five Points Gang led by Paul Kelly. Eventually Dropper and Spanish were both sentenced to prison and became suitors for the same woman. Dropper was assassinated by a teenager in 1923.
