Some racing fans recall Alberto Ascari primarily for his wreck at the harbor during the 1955 Grand Prix of Monaco. His Lancia went into the water and fortunately he escaped unscathed following the accident. Alberto was a racer's racer. Prince Bira won the 1936 Coupe du Prince Ranier, an event that later became the crown jewel of Formula One racing, renamed the Grand Prix of Monaco. Many of the auto races in which the Thai competed were entered privately. Among the most noteworthy of the cars he drove was a Simca-Gordini that had been painted the light blue and yellow that symbolized the Thai royal family. Another was a Maserati.

Luigi Musso was at once an Italian race driver and playboy. He dated playgirl/writer Doris Lilly (author of How To Marry A Millionaire) and beautiful Italian actress Fiamma Breschi. Musso was unfortunately one of many casualties of the sport he loved best. He died at Reims, France early in the 1958 French Grand Prix. Breschi held his hand in the hospital before trying suicide the same day.

Sergio Mantovani had a bright future in Grand Prix racing it was thought in the mid-1950s. Then circumstances and fate intervened and Mantovani's career ended abruptly the same season he began to race Formula 1 cars. He was part of a contingent of fine Italian drivers who were extended contracts by Maserati in 1953. Among the others was Luigi Musso who was later killed at a very young age.
