A Very Able Seaman
by Neville J. Anderson-Budd
I was 19 when I joined the Royal Navy as a ‘Hostilities Only’ Able Seaman in 1938 and sent to H.M.S. Ganges in Suffolk for my basic training. This lasted approximately 10 weeks; but as WWII was looming we could be sent to a sea-going ship at any time.
When we arrived at HMS Ganges we were shown to our new home our mess, where we were supposed to spend the next 10 weeks.
