I am publishing a directory of firemen who worked for the city of Chicago, various railroads, and numerous businesses in 1872. My research is taken from the United States Business Directory of 1872. 1872 was the year that followed the great conflagration, i.e the Great Chicago Fire of October 8-10, 1871.Putting out fires was handled by steam engines that were often pulled by teams of horses.
