Crofton Eer, a member of a militaristic society set in a canyon that knows only war, seeks an escape from the troubled canyon in which he lives, guided by the embodiment of the lone star that is visible from the canyon depths. His escape takes him on a journey in which he discovers that there are a great many more stars (gods) in the sky, which leads to a search for truth in the valley of life.
Craig Lock is an extensive world traveller and failed professional emigrater who has spent most of his life's savings on airfares. He is still 'sliding down the razor blade of life', stuck on a deserted (other than a few brilliant rugby players) island at the bottom of the world near Antarctica, where he is 'trying to throw a double six' to get off and go out into the real world.
This is a short story, one of many. But, it is very precious to me, very close, and although not biographical,has some important issues that I have at last dealt with.
