Max Becker was tried for the murder of Auburn Penitentiary Principal Keeper Max Becker in 1930. Following a prison revolt Becker was one of the few prisoners who remained alive. Becker's defense attorneys emphasized the deplorable conditions in which the Auburn inmates lived. The food was unfit to eat, and according to attorney Sam Leibowitz, Becker was prosecuted primarily because he survived.
