John Kirby's talent and humble beginnings in Winchester, Va. landed him in New York City in 1929 as the tubaist and bassist for The Fletcher Henderson Orchestra. Performing with Chick Webb and Billie Holiday, led him to form his own group. John Kirby's Orchestra set a precedence for jazz orchestras when they sponsored their radio jazz series on CBS called "Flow Gently Sweet Rhythm" in 1940-41.
