Rattlesnakes measure "8 foot long," where I come from. AND some even chase you. Nobody knows what happens if they catch you.
We tell our tales for hours, gathered round a pickup's tailgate, around campfires--even standing in line at the supermarket.
Dead snakes dangling from poles along the highways are commonplace, and they stay there till the buzzards peck the jewels from their hides.
