About Ruth Marcus

Ruth Marcus dreamed of experiencing cultures beyond her small-town upbringing in Wisconsin. In 1969, she hitch-hiked to San Francisco with two college friends. Civil rights, women’s rights, gay rights, and equal rights have been the focus of her life since that time.

Ruth earned a Masters Degree in Psychology and a Doctorate Degree in Religious Studies. She owned two graphic design businesses, one in San Francisco and the other in Sausalito. She also taught typography to art students at the Academy of Art in San Francisco and partnered to create Scarlet Crane, a mail-order line of outdoor clothing for large size women. Her volunteer work over the years includes Soroptimist International, League of Women Voters, and Hospice of Clallam County.

Ruth Marcus currently lives in the Pacific Northwest. A former columnist for the Sequim Gazette, her most-recent published book is GOOD GRIEF: 58 Ways to Manage Your Life (2020, Wide Awake Publishing). It contains fifty-eight essays taken from seven-years as a columnist for the Sequim Gazette on the Olympic Peninsula (2003-2010). She decided to publish this collection to support, educate and inspire individuals and families to better manage their lives when facing challenging times.

Her first published book, INSPIRATION to OPEN YOUR HEART, AWAKEN YOUR MIND, and TOUCH YOUR SOUL (2006, Wide Awake Publishing), is a pocketsize book with 365 of the best of thousands of short morning messages she emailed to friends, caregivers, doctors, politicians, professors, housewives, students and spiritual leaders nationwide over the course of seven years. “The concise messages help readers greet each day with strength and optimism. Some will make you smile, some will inspire you, and some will lead you to contemplation,” comments Ruth. This book was also chosen as a source of inspirational discussion for prisoners in San Quentin. “Your small book is truly a bounty of wisdom, reflection and inspiration. Thank you for this gift to the world.”

In 2017, Ruth published a collection of Haiku and original mandala drawings in a hardbound, 4-color book titled Haiku & Mandala: The Wedding of Ancient Art. Ruth inspires readers with her imagistic poetry and hand-drawn mandalas. This case-bound collector’s edition is a lush journey into ancient-art-cum modern. The sound of frogs and crows rise from the page. Freshly fallen snow and baked bread tickle your senses. From ice fishing to meditation, this collection is an exceptional and original wedding of two ancient arts—haiku and mandala. It is available at wideawakepublishing.com.

Ruth’s writing passion includes daily poetry writing. Her poems have been published in numerous anthologies, including the 2017 Washington State Poets Anthology. She is working on a creative memoir, scheduled to be publish in 2021.

In addition to her books being available at local bookstores, Ingram-Spark and Amazon, they are available at WideAwakePublishing.com.
