Eric Axelbaum is an award-winning elementary school teacher. He has taught second grade for 14 years at Forsyth School, an independent school in St. Louis, Missouri. In 2006, he won the prestigious “Teacher of Distinction” award from Independent Schools of St. Louis (ISSL). Making learning fun and increasing self-esteem are two top priorities he has for his students. Both of his books emphasize these goals.
About 20 years ago, Eric was diagnosed with a neurological impairment that made it difficult to write and draw neatly. While admittedly not particularly gifted before, the disability made it even more challenging to create artwork that was
enjoyable. Not long after, his medical doctor confirmed what he had already suspected, that he was almost completely color blind, making it virtually impossible to discern between like colors.
His first book, Eric Loves Art , demonstrates how a little boy overcomes his physical limitations by learning techniques and using ideas to make art fun. While Eric Loves Art is written specifically for art teachers, its story and moral can be useful to any teacher or parent.
In his second book, A Bee With A Degree, he continues these themes by illustrating animals doing things that rhyme with their name. The reader must try to guess what each animal is doing, with clues along the way.
