I wrote "Demystify Wine in an Hour: 6 Simple Keys to Enjoy Wine Anywhere, Anytime!" because I wanted to help people just starting out with wine who want to know more about it - yet don't have the time, interest or capacity to study it for years like me or other wine aficionados and connoisseurs.
Over the years, I've noticed most people get completely stressed out, confused and overwhelmed by the amount of information available in most wine books. I've also noticed that most wine books sold try to be the one-stop shop for all the information a human being will ever need in their lifetime: 300 pages here, 500 pages there. For the beginner, reading 300-500 pages of wine's intricate details is like being pinned under a suffocating avalanche.
I’ve noticed the biggest source of fear and stress people have about wine is making the "right" choice at the store or a restaurant. Therein lies what I call the "Wine Trap" in the book: how can someone learn enough about wine to make the "right" choice (let alone actually make the “right” choice) when they're afraid, stressed, confused and overwhelmed?
What happened to wine being fun?
In order for you to have fun again with wine, you have to break free from the Wine Trap first. Context before content.
Then, you need to be brought back to what caused you to like wine in the first place: the juice in the glass. Instead of trying to learn about it with your mind, you’re going to slow down and notice its details with four of your five senses. There's a big difference.
After wine tasting, you will learn how to handle other wine situations that cause people stress: food and wine pairing, reading a wine list, reading a wine label, and ordering wine in a restaurant.
Over the course of this short book, you will be empowered to have a wine conversation with another person – that alone can remove the burden and pressure of having to know everything about wine and begin to leverage someone else's knowledge, passion and love for it instead.
That's how I learned about wine in the beginning - lots of conversations, tasting and laughing with passionate wine aficionados that had much more knowledge than me. Through them, my knowledge and passion for wine grew until I was doing the same for others. The reading and studying came a decade later.
This book is definitely not designed to be everything for everybody.
We don’t spend any time learning about grapes, regions, wineries, winemakers, terroir, vine grafting techniques and diseases, viticulture, vinification, fermentation, French vs. American oak barrels, bottling, aging, oxidation, blah blah blah.
Why? You don’t need to learn any of that stuff in the first hour of your wine education to enjoy it – you need freedom and relief from fear, tension and stress first. You can begin learning all that stuff later … preferably when you’re no longer afraid of it.
