About the Series: Catherine and Josephine
I read the Grimm Brother's fairy tale of the Goose Girl, and while I found it interesting, it lacked depth and sympathy. On the way to her arranged wedding, the princess's maid betrays her on the journey and forces the princess to change clothing and identity. So far, so good. The women arrive at the castle, and the true princess, now working as a goose girl, attracts the King's notice for her elegance and grace. What malarky! A real King wouldn't notice a mere peasant girl! So, he get suspicious, and asks the girl who has forced the princess to take her place, what she would do if a fraud were discovered. She stupidly says, "Why, I'd cut off that person's head!" And voila, the King exposes the maid as a fraud and has her sent off to her execution, while the 'true' princess is restored to her rightful place, at the Prince's side . . . only, it got me to thinking. The prince has already been banging the goose girl, maybe he likes her better? And what kind of a life did the maid live to cause her to engage in such a treasonous act? My two-part series explores these issues.
