About Alan Merickel

I am a published Prentice-Hall author and was inspired to tell the story of Natalie and Duck by my four beautiful granddaughters.

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and love to visit Ocean Beach.

Review by: Beth Matesi on Jan. 9, 2012 :
This book is appropriate for middle childhood (8-11 years old) and can also appeal to adults. I especially liked that the girl is a birdwatcher, and the book made that activity sound like a cool hobby for kids. Adding text messages helped the story feel current. I also thought it was a good idea to put in text shorthand, because kids like to figure out riddles, and there is a glossary in back for those who can't figure out the shorthand. It's got a lot of appeal because it deals with concepts such as cultural diversity, tolerance, and homelessness. I thought the photographs were a good addition. They appeal to people familiar with San Francisco, and they also create an image for people unfamiliar with the area.
