A simple girl obsessed with rough sex and writing.

Breaking Emily gives the lie to the notion that explicit works must sacrifice character. In such a short space, Claudia Sweet deftly crafts characters, makes you feel for them, and makes you feel right there with them. Emily's every trembling breath resonates with the reader and pulls you into her place. Her nameless slave-handler has a rough charisma that pushes all the right buttons. It's very easy to believe that his charges give over to him-- just reading the story made me want to do that myself!
There's a lot of mileage to be had in the setting she creates and its timeless could-be-anywhere-anywhen quality. It feels vaguely modern but there's no way to tell if it's set in our world or in some fantasy city. This is only to the story's benefit, however, as this creates a dreamy air that thoroughly bolsters the suspension of disbelief that one requires to believe in an ilicit slave-market. Eagerly waiting for more.
