What would happen if you had your deepest wishes granted only to have them taken away repeatedly? You would go insane, and so would the rest of the world. With a virus released upon the world, havoc is wrought on the minds of those infected. People are tormented by those thoughts and feelings kept hidden so deeply from ourselves that we didn’t know how they would affect us until we are forced to experience them in all their terror. This intrusion into the human mind causes the greatest of fears to be played out as reality. These delusions of fear are offset by the most optimistic of hopes to be brought to life, simply to be stolen by tragedy. The only options left to those infected with this new biological threat are suicide as an escape, or a battle to the last against one’s own weaknesses. Through an outbreak of global proportions the world is left with few survivors and even fewer worthy of having survived.
A person deserted in a world that they recently knew so unquestionably, can’t help but seek remnants of that world. People have the need to be around one another, to create communities, explore social structures and this is the driving force left to the individuals who find themselves alone in the darkness. Coming together to create something in the midst of so much destruction is the only choice left. It is in this coming together that friendships, enemies, pacts and plans are made to potentially secure the tomorrow that is promised to no one.
Those left in a world void of companionship, authority, decency and trust must find whatever solace they can in their fellow survivors. For some this is an experience that will strengthen their resolve to bring the world back from the dark days it has seen. For others it will be a time of great opportunity to oppress those seeking only to see the next day. Within each of us lies the potential for extremes. Only through the trials of great hardship are we able to test these extremes and discover exactly how far we will go. The only question left to us is in which direction we will allow these circumstances to take us. Through each survivor’s personal endeavor to see the next day they are pushed to those limits which will define them.
With those who are more concerned with their own prosperity rather than the survival of humans as a whole and their achievements to date becoming the majority, the world is heading past the point of salvation. What, however, is the consolation of saving a world whose only future is a choice between self destruction and the potential to become infected with a further incarnation of a virus. Is there truly a light at the end of the journey? Is there anything good awaiting those resilient enough to live another day as well as fight off the insanity creeping into every thought? All that may remain is the uneasiness of a world caught in that time before sleep when reality is slipping away.
