This story was inspired by true events. You do not pray to God for money, especially prize money. That was the 'bible' according to our very Catholic mother. She never really called it a sin, but she most definitely hinted that it was. I felt at times she was on the verge of saying, "It's a sin, so there." I believe she wouldn't go that far because she knew she would have been telling us a lie. And we all know, telling a lie is a sin. I suppose I grew up somewhat confused because of this rule, as she called it. "That's the rule and that's the way it is," she would say. Maybe that was the rule, but if there was a loophole, I was determined to find it.
