I was not a normal child. While other kids were playing baseball or Barbie, I was contemplating the meaning of the universe. At age twelve, I refused to attend church any longer, declaring "Nature is my sanctuary," and walking the woods behind the church while the family was inside.
I was always telling stories. My first venture into multimedia storytelling came when I was about ten years old. My friend Kurt and I wrote a story that we "filmed" with an instamatic camera and black-and-white film. The marionettes my grandfather gave me were the actors: a clown, a wizard, and a French poodle. I can't remember the plot we cooked up, but the fiery conclusion took place in a metal trash can.
I continued writing stories through my teens, and after graduating from college went to a graduate filmmaking program. What a relevation: here was a medium that married storytelling, photography, and music. I never did make the Hollywood big time, but to this day I make little videos from time to time, just to amuse myself and my friends.
