About Tim Rolston

I am an outdoorsman, not a computer boffin, or at least that was the picture when I started this a few years back. Since then I have become caught up with the advantages of electronic media. Steep learning curves continue, frustrations abound but out of that crucible have I think come some really worthwhile publications. How to Make your own fly fishing lanyard was the first and remains the most popular of all the titles. Plus it's free. Then "Who Packed your Parachute" an investigation into better ways to tie parachute flies followed.Still an experiment and free to anyone. Recently my book "Learn to Fly-cast in a Weekend" previously published in hard cover was converted to electronic format making it available to a far wider audience. It has received great reviews and just recently the comprehensive and highly innovative "Essential Fly Tying Skills" book, which was previously only available on CD due to the file sizes has been made available for instant download. I am still passionate about the outdoors, fly fishing and writing. I hope that you will enjoy the books and find them useful. I further hope that as I learn more there will be more titles with ever better content. Regards Tim

Many years ago I had the good fortune of being guided by Tim and also attending his weekly fly-tying sessions. The many things I learned then have been put into practice ever since.
This eBook is well written, very informative and easy to follow. The video links are an excellent way of illustrating the topics being covered. Both newcomers to the sport and more experienced fly-tyers will benefit greatly from this book which contains a myriad of tips and techniques which will improve the reader's own tying methods.
I highly recommend it and look forward to reading his other publications.

I started fly tying with this book. After Tim guided me to South African streams and whitnessed my poor casting style he gave me the book "Learn to Fly-cast in a weekend" which made it very easy for me to improve my casting. As I also wanted to tie my own flies I started learning to tie with his book. I got two other books from friends, but they are both not to compare with this one. With easy steps I learned tying good effective flies within a short time. I have tested them on various rivers and they work well! Great book, thank you Tim.

some amazingly simple techniques that make ALL the difference to things that I have been battling with for ages e.g. tying posts are now so much less messy and complicated.

Thank you Tim Rolston for sending me a copy of Essential Fly Tying Techniques, through Smashwords. (www.smashwords.com).

In the short period I've been trying to tie flies I have accumulated a number of books on fly tying techniques for the beginner. None of them come close to comparing with Tim's Essential Fly Tying Techniques.

The instructions make for easy and coherent reading. The graphic illustrations are superb. But it's the videos I find the most illuminating. Having them on tap so that you can replay them over and over is like having your very own private fly tying expert in your home! To me, having visual demonstrations is the best way to learn.

Thank you again Tim Rolston. I highly recommend Essential Fly Tying Techniques!!

Recently I received a copy of Tim Rolston’s Essential Fly Tying Techniques, through Smashwords. (www.smashwords.com).
Just by considering the cover, I could tell that this is different, as it comprised of Detailed Instructions, (Decent start),Graphics (Wouldn’t assume anything less ), and Video (Something else) All this, aimed at covering fundamental fly tying methods, essential tools, materials and more.
As an intermediary fly-tier it could only be good to revise and revisit basic technique, and by doing so…, the penny did drop a few times when tackling some rather challenging technique at the bench, with the benefit of clear text, excellent illustration and instructive audio-visual clips.
This book is definitely designed, with the novice, or young fly-tier in mind, but does not exclude any skill levels. Rather, Tim Rolston “ties” his knowledge together in an enjoyable platform that caters for all.
I’m certainly looking forward to Tim Rolston’s sequel to this work.

Tying your own flies is the only way to fully explore what fly fishing has to offer. The satisfaction of taking your first fish on your own fly builds your confidence in every aspect of the sport. If you have decided to take this step then a firm grounding in the basic techniques is the starting point.

Without doubt the best way to learn is with hands on instruction, I was fortunate that lessons were available at the time I started. For many people lessons are not available. There are plenty of books that attempt to give you the basics, as a book Essential Fly Tying Techniques stands comparison with the best of them. Unlike others it doesn't stop there. By giving you access to video tutorials it gives you a real time demonstration of techniques. Invaluable if you are starting out on this journey alone.

Both Tim and myself are not in the best position to write a beginners book. We both tie flies, and therefore, have acquired the language of fly tying. Putting yourself into the position of a novice isn't easy. It is pitfall that Tim has avoided well. Something I look out for in books such as this is the use of a fly tying term that hasn't been explained previously . I found none in Essential Fly Tying Techniques.

Essential Fly Tying Techniques will give you the best start in the art and craft of fly tying. Even if you have hands on instruction, it will help you to develop between your lessons.
