Moorings follows 23-year old Anne Holloway as she journeys up to a small, Alaskan fishing town to find her biological father. Review by: Tricia Gates Brown on June 25, 2012 :
Moorings is the lavishly woven tale of a family system fractured by deception and loss, mirroring the ecosystem fracturing, post oil spill, that precipitated family conflict. The story takes place in an Alaska fishing village near Prince William Sound, and enlivens a region equally demanding and awe-inspiring. The author’s passion and respect for the region are contagious. When main character Anne steps off a ferry at Snug Harbor and sets out to find her father, the reader is taken along on a journey fraught with mystery and painful self-discovery. I was entertained, surprised, and thoroughly on-board for this journey. I finished the book with a longing to commence my own Alaska pilgrimage.

This is a great story. I had to force myself to put it aside several times so I could get chores done. As a wildlife biologist and someone who has spent some time in Alaska, some of that as a commercial fisherman, I found Slavin's descriptions of Alaska fishermen and fishing villages and wildlife to be impeccably accurate. She is clearly writing about a familiar subject. Her description of the courtship and flight of violet green swallows could have been placed in an ornithology text book. But it was the personal drama that made the book hard to put down.

Moorings took me on an adventure to a port in Alaska where I have never been but could picture very well in my mind. The characters depth and action drew me into the story of love, life, and adventure. Well done, Nancy!

Moorings brought me into a port in Alaska where I have never been, yet I could picture the settings well; introduced me to people I have not met before, and told a tale of love, adventure, and life that left me full. Thank you for a wonderful novel, Nancy!

Review by: Denise Harrington on April 8, 2012 :
Moorings reads like a Stegner mixed with Steinbeck kind of book. The parallels between the environment and the people who inhabit it are intricately woven. The characters have that dichotomy of values and action that we all possess but find so hard to believe can exist in one person. Great plot. Poetically written. A fine novel!
