About Leon Mare

About the author:-

Leon Mare was born in South Africa, and lived close to the Kruger National Park for most of his life. He was involved in extensive wildlife research, and spent all of his free time in the African wilderness. Dr. Mare has an intimate knowledge of the wilder side of Africa, which is reflected in most of his work. He has written several TV drama series, and produced a TV documentary on the indiscriminate killing of marlin during billfish competitions on the east coast of Africa. This resulted in a major paradigm shift to tagging and releasing these fish instead.

He has published seven books on Amazon Kindle, the latest being book five in the Sam Jenkins Trilogy series.

In 2013 Leon and his wife Monica returned to South Africa after ten years in the UK. They settled in the tiny village of Yzerfontein on the Cape West Coast, where he spends his days writing, fishing and bundu bashing with his best friend Mother Nature.

A gripping tale. Once you start you will turn page after page. The description of the African bush is sublime! You can truly imagine you are there. Factually written with insights into animal behaviour this book is a great mixture of action and suspense but at the same time informative.

A very enjoyable read.

This is a decent read. The depictions of South African life and poaching are incredibly detailed and exciting. Sam Jenkins is a believable and charismatic protagonist, and the storyline is smart, fun, and full of action. It is definitely a page-turner.

As far as criticisms, the novel needs some editing work done. There are numerous typos and grammatical errors that catch your eye and make you stumble through the reading. That’s not uncommon in Smashwords books, but in several instances it detracted from the story.

Also, the love connection between Sam and Estelle seems cheapened by his affair with Linda. I never really was convinced that he did indeed love Estelle, and yet the author tries hard to make the reader think that is the case.

Aside from those two items, this is an excellent read. I went into this novel knowing absolutely nothing about poaching and really South Africa in general, and yet the author paints a perfect canvas with his words. I’m looking forward to checking out other works by him.

I first read the book quite a few years ago and I was hooked from the first few pages, I could barely put it down. I read it again almost 15 years later and it was exactly the same, could not wait for what Sam was about to do next. Brilliant read!

My husband was given the paperback version of "Poacher" (then entitled "Dying is not Easy") personally signed by the author, Leon Mare, as a birthday present which I have now had the pleasure of reading. It is beautifully written with no words too many nor too few - it was literature at its best. It is one of those rare books which is avidly devoured from cover to cover with heart-stopping events and incidents on every other page. One can forgive the reader for thinking that they were bystanders watching the entire scene unfold: the atmosphere was so intimate and real. I cannot see anyone who reads this book who will not be seduced by Africa. Purely brilliant.

This book kept me up most of the night, but it was worth it. Very good read. I heard on the news this morning that so far this year 159 rhinos have already been poached in the Kruger Park. Extinction looms! Why don't they do something about it? Seems they need more guys like Sam Jenkins!

Wham – another great novel! A real page turner, as they would say! Unique and exciting characters, and set in the most beautiful place on God’s green earth. With the immense publicity currently in South Africa (and the rest of the world) on the subject of Rhino poaching, this is a unique look behind the scenes of what is really happening to South Africa’s most precious recourse - our amazing wildlife. A unique story told by a unique author. I can’t wait to see what lies ahead for Sam Jenkins!

Truly excellent book, properly researched and written by an author who is well versed in all things ‘African’. Particularly recommended to those who enjoyed Wilbur Smith’s earlier works…although this has a touch more reality to it (and a touch less swashbuckling-James-Bond-of-the-Bush type stuff). Heart-wrenchingly epic.
