"You would be able to live as we do," Autumn continued for him as Frost fussed with his long pale hair, watching her with anxious eyes. "You could live among us, Change at will - see the plains as we see them."
Jenny's head spun. She could stay? It had only been an afternoon, but she felt so at home here already - and galloping across the prairie in the incredibly strong, swift form of a horse… she'd never felt anything like that rush. But her research - her life wasn't always easy, but it was worthwhile, and she felt the work she did was important, that she was making a difference.
But - seeing the prairie as a horse, living it through such different eyes - could she really give that up?
She bit her lip. "Would it be - permanent? I wouldn't be able to leave? It's wonderful here, but my work…"
The anxious lines in Frost's forehead uncreased, replaced by the soft crinkle of a smile at the corners of his eyes. "If you came back to us eventually, we would not begrudge you your roaming."
Windrunner nodded. "We can see it in you, that you care for what you do, and it is part of why we respect you."
"To have you as our head mare would be a great honor," added Buckthorn.
Jenny sat quietly for a moment, trying to think it over, but in her heart the decision was already made. "I would love to join you. What do I need to do?"
Autumn and the others looked away, cheeks flushing. The rest of the herd seemed similarly sheepish, save for Frost, who held her gaze steadily in spite of the heat rising to his skin.
"To join the herd, you would have to, ah… join with us. You would have to take each one of us for your mate," he said evenly.
