About Ellen Jayne

Stories, and the art of telling them, have always captured my interest. I began telling tales at a really young age, and never stopped. In the last few years I decided to write them down, as the characters I spend time with wouldn't have it any other way.

A resurfacing theme in my writing is questioning the perception of reality. Always consistent, whether people believe in paranormal or supernatural occurrences or not, they will make time to listen to an eerie story. Of course, the reasons for listening are varied, but the conversation that follows never fails to be lively.

With an undergraduate degree in Fine Arts/Art History and a graduate degree in Creative Writing, Advice From A Dead Stripper is my first novel.

The paradox of a bucolic setting lurking with danger - both physical and emotional - is one I could certainly relate to. But I was still surprised to find the story so believable, what with a dead stripper ghost and all (which I concluded was Catherine's suppressed personality). The characters are well developed, but their every thought is not spoon-fed to the reader, allowing our own imaginations to ponder some of the characters' motivations and secrets based on our personal experiences. That's a welcome lack of condescension and an incredible accomplishment for a first novel. Maybe the best compliment I can give is that reading this book re-established a love of fiction - dormant through years of non-fiction study - and made this past winter one of my most enjoyable ever. It's been a pleasure. Thanks Ellen.

The plot had promise but to my mind didn't deliver, and I couldn't relate to the main character at all.

Too much time spend describing visuals (such as the ceiling texture!) and not enough on the thoughts and personalities of the characters. However other reviewers seemed to have seen something I missed.

I have to admit, it’s the title that first caught my eye. ADVICE FROM DEAD STRIPPER. I decided to read a few pages to see if author Ellen Jayne could deliver after so provocative a start. I’m thrilled to report that Jayne far exceeded my expectations. She keeps the reader guessing all the way to the finish line. Is Susan really a ghost or some alter ego that Catherine has concocted to deal with her own trauma? Is Officer McGinn as honorable as he first seems? And what secret from Catherine’s past forced her to start a new life in a place so far from home? Jayne creates the kind of suspense that keeps her readers coming back for more.

As an added bonus, Jayne’s writing is lyrical. I found myself lingering over her imagery, savoring it like poetry. ADVICE FROM A DEAD STRIPPER is a wonderful read. I look forward to other works by this author.
