It was the last summer of my childhood. In the early 1970s, we had a hippie as a lifeguard at the neighborhood pool. My friends and I thought he was so cool, and we called his van "The Makeout Machine". When one of us had a bad accident and he came to the rescue, I learned that grownups can't always fix everything. That was when I started to grow up.
