This is the first book I have read by this Author and I must say I was surprised at how well the event's and content were presented to us. The quality of this Author's writing style and narrative abilities took us into a world that had a feeling of living during the middle 16th or 17th century, actually it felt very medieval due to how events and the hierarchy still controlled everything within there town.
A young man, who is finally coming of age had only one request for his birthday, so as he has just turned 18 he believes that he is now old enough to go with his father to town, and meet the king along with father and see what goes on. Going into the town centre to see what actually goes on is his most cherished thought.
Like most Young Adults curiosity is the center of their lives, and young Ian is no different.
Ian seems to think that by going to Gabbs, the town they are visiting, something amazing would definitely happen little did he realise how close to the truth he was in his belief.
What changes Ian's one wish is the king has stopped anyone from going to town, as a Very Important Annual Event was going to occur and as this involves a sacrificial presentation to the Jinn, a monster that should not be viewed, due to his hideous desires and appearance, a public order is given, NO ONE IS TO BE IN TOWN AFTER DARK.
Kyler Mathew really knows how to leave the reader's feeling every emotion being experienced by the numerous character's ,with a natural understanding of curiosity, fear excitement and pure revulsion, the descriptions given to us are amazing, you can almost visualize what each character has seen before and hopes to never witness again. The only problem is, our young Ian chooses to ignore the warnings he was given and is so caught up with his desire to complete his wish, that he forget's he is not allowed to go anywhere by himself definitely to stay far away from the city as the Jinn could decide that another would be a better sacrifice.
The Jinn cannot resist choosing someone else who has created unstoppable desires from taking effect within this uncontrollable monster, and the Author gives us view's that a re impossible to not see.
I must admit I found the storyline completely different from anything I would usually read, even though I enjoyed how well the event's were related to us I found certain content lacking in detail and depth in some section's. Yet all in all I thought the Author general description and narrative abilities were excellent.
For someone who enjoys a storyline that involves this type of content would most likely really enjoy what they are reading.
But for the most part, Kyler Mathew gives us a real life view of just how tunnel visioned the young are and how circumstances can change their world in a split second.
