Open on an old swashbuckling, black and white Hollywood movie that ends with a triumphant cliché kiss. Enjoying the show is a young girl named Hannah. Along with the rest of the audience, she is then shown a haunting newsreel of Hitler and the war.
Hannah walks down the streets of 1940 Paris witnessing families evacuating boarded up homes and shops, but her spirits remain high.
One night, as her family packs up the house preparing to evacuate, Hannah struggles to get some sleep imagining that there are monsters in her closet. With no help from her mother or the maid, Hannah’s imagination springs to life as a Robin Hood character and his bumbling sidekick burst into her room to help fight the “monsters.” They then whisk Hannah away into a world of fantasy and adventure signing her up to join their mission.
In a brief moment, they swing off Hannah’s balcony to a medieval forest where they soon encounter the villain of the story, who strangely resembles Adolf Hitler, even including the silly little mustache after a sword fight chops down his normal mustache. They’re suddenly in the midst of an attack, which includes trying to save a princess, the damsel in distress. Hannah’s fantasy is filled with fun, laughs, sword fights and tons of adventure, which ends happily, but she is disrupted when her father wakes her out of bed and whisks her away into the night as Nazi artillery is heard booming in the distance.
Hannah’s reality is filled with fear, hiding and separation from her father who is trying to get his family out of France and to America. Hannah would prefer to stay and fight it out with all her patriotism, but in the real world, Hannah’s aspirations aren’t possible. Therefore, it’s not long before Hannah’s imagination sees the return of the Robin Hood character and his sidekick.
Throughout the story, Hannah is torn between reality and fantasy as she continues with adventures in both worlds. In reality, the darkness of the war scares Hannah causing her to use her imagination to return to the fantasy where she is a hero, fighting side by side with knights in shining armor to defeat evil and restore peace. Opposed to the harsh life of war, Hannah’s fantasy is filled with comedy, adventure and pure joy. Through it all, Hannah learns the true meaning of bravery and courage as well as the importance of one’s imagination.
