Aleksandr Yakovlev was one of the few pioneering Soviet aircraft designers that appeared not to have incurred the wrath of Stalin and usually provided the right airplanes at the right time such as the superb Yak-3 that in 1944 was giving the Me 109 and Fw 190 a hard time. Post-war the Yak-25 high-altitude interceptor gave rise to a number of variants used in the Cold War as was the Yak-36/38 VTOL
