Loribel Maldonado was born in Rio Piedras Puerto Rico in 1979. She is the youngest of five girls that were raised by a single mother. During the mid-80’s Loribel’s family migrated from Puerto Rico to the United States in search of a new life. Years later, because of financial hardships, Loribel is sent to move into Spanish Harlem with her grandmother. Her grandmother was extremely strict and an avid Pentecostal. Made to study the bible day in and day out Loribel has always been intrigued with the story of creation. As a child, she was very inquisitive and more often than not, her imagination ran wild during Sunday school lessons.
As an adult, Loribel studied Accounting at Monroe College in the Bronx, New York where she struggled to raise her daughter as a single parent all the while working towards a degree. There she earned an Associate degree and graduated Magna Cum Laude in spite of life’s struggles. Earning her Associates degree was just the beginning of a long adventure
Loribel moved away from New York and into Florida with her husband Reinaldo who still gives her butterflies. In Florida she pursued a career in Law Enforcement but that was not the final lap in this race we call life. Loribel still felt like there was something missing and she wanted more. After almost ten years, Loribel returns to NYC where she got a job as a Fraud Investigator. After a very long break, Loribel went back to school and earned a Baccalaureate Degree in Criminal Justice from Monroe College where she graduated top of her class as Suma Cum Laude. In addition, Loribel is currently pursuing a Master of Arts degree in English Literature from Mercy College Online. It was during her online studies there that the idea for “The Three” materialized.
After studying the works of Phillip K. Dick for a Science Fiction class and “The bible as literature” class, she was able to revisit her wild childhood ideas. Loribel when asked about the origin of the idea for The Three Loribel stated:
“I was never able to openly express my curiosity about the stories in the bible. The bible has so many wonderful stories some of which left so much room for question in my mind. The dogma surrounding the beliefs of a Pentecost is so taboo and strict that taking the texts from the holy book and making it your own is not accepted. Some say that it is forbidden; at least that is how it was explained to me. My grandmother used to say that certain religions that believed in and that used versions of the bible that differed from the King James Version of the bible were committing a mortal sin. She further believed that anyone who alters the sacred text will face severe punishment in the afterlife. However, after taking “The Bible as Literature” course at Mercy College I was able to approach the bible as just that “literature.” Nowadays writers are taking common fables and rewriting them as their own with added twists; I figured why I couldn’t do the same. Here is the disclaimer; I in no way, shape, or form intend to replace the texts found in the Holy Scriptures. In my mind they stand as is, but in the world of literature...it’s fair game.”
Loribel is currently living in the Bronx, New York with her husband Reinaldo, her daughter JeT’aime, her son Jeremiah, her sister Madeline, and their two hyperactive cats Friday and Saturday. Loribel enjoys to let her mind wander into the “What if’s” and feels that everyone should do it occasionally because it is a sure fire way to change the way you view your day.
