Taos Soul: Love Stories, Heroes, and Wild Adventure

"It was Friday afternoon, and the post office was full of Indians..."

From the opening sentence, you know you're in a different world. Part memoir, nature writing, black comedy, confession, and journal of spiritual discovery, Taos Soul is a collection of 62 true stories about life in an old adobe at 7,000 feet in northern New Mexico from 2005 to 2010. About John Hamilton Farr

I write books and push digital content from Taos, New Mexico, U.S.A. Besides BUFFALO LIGHTS and TAOS SOUL, I’ve also published numerous Web and print columns (Farr Site, GRACK!, El Emigrante, MacFaust). Please see my Books page at JHFARR.COM for more details.

My wife and I moved to el Norte 14 years ago from Maryland. I’ve been publishing online since 1996 and was among the first salaried Web columnists, helping to launch that ongoing saga. (You can retrace the adventure and its many revelations in my current books.) Some of you may know me from my work for Applelinks and MacAddict. My longest-running blog is FarrFeed, now off the air, and you may have heard of FotoFeed, but this is where it happens now. You can keep up with new posts by subscribing to this site or following me on Twitter (@taosjohn).

I was born in Texas as an Air Force brat and stayed that way for 16 years. We lived in Texas, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Germany, Texas and Maryland again and then New York. I went to high school in three states and earned two degrees at the University of Texas. On my own I lived in Austin (TX), Arkansas, and Maryland (where I met my wife) before we came out West. In no particular order and in most cases long ago, I’ve been a sculptor, painter, teacher, woods hippie, small bronze caster, office manager, groundskeeper, cartoonist, rock & roll songwriter, senior news editor, Web designer, and a whole lot more. But a) who cares now, and b) something happened along the way and this is it. Stick around and you can say you knew me when!

"When I'm able to write like that, I feel ecstasy and unity with all Creation. It's like an athlete performing an 'impossible' feat with seeming effortlessness and grace. I live for that... When I'm in that state, I don't care about money or sex or food. I don't care about who I am or what I am. I don't care if I'm in the front of the line or at the very end. I don't even care if I'm alive or dead, because it seems I'm in the same place, either way."
