Sheldrake Hymes Spoof Sleuth
221B Baker Street, London, the address of the famous detective Sherlock Holmes. But what if someone with a similar name moved in to 221A and persuaded a friend to act the part of Doctor Watson? Clients could very easily ring the wrong doorbell. And if the 'doctor' took his part rather seriously, by not only recording their adventures but also taking on a few patients, well that was his business. More
This is a broad parody of the adventures of Sherlock Holmes. It comprises a series of tales set amidst the crime-ridden world of late nineteenth century Victorian London. There are the traditional elements of mystery and intrigue, but comedy takes centre stage with a veritable avalanche of jokes, wit and one-liners. So much so that the reader, much like the main protagonists, may quite often lose the plot - this being of very little consequence. For what it's worth, their varied adventures involve them trying to solve a case while knowing nothing about it, being lost in the fog, and then surrounded by the squalor of the East End. They also try to prevent the outbreak of World War 1, and the collapse of the Catholic Church. Subsequently, a holiday goes badly wrong, Watson's libido causes problems, and they are faced with the Crime of the Century. Their final challenge involves other rival Sherlock Holmes impostors.
